They Said Peace
By Dr- Amany El-Sawy
They stand in the breach and do not repair it.
They cry Peace where no peace was sworn,
And daub the cracks with untempered mortar,
White as a promise already broken.
They trade in whispers and measured delays,
Casting lots for the hour of collapse;
They know the weight of a falling wall
And wait, like wolves, for the dust.
They love the wound more than the covenant,
The rent more than the robe.
When the wall remembers its name
And rises,
They are scattered like chaff
That never learned the wind.
